Belviq® and its generic versions, lorcaserin are very popular weight-loss drugs used in the United States. It is sold and produced by Eisai Inc and was first approved by the FDA in 2012. Belviq® manufacturer Eisai, a Japanese company, has agreed to recall Belviq® from the market after the FDA performed an analysis of safety study results and found a very serious increased risk of several types of cancer in individuals who took Belviq®.
After the FDA approved Belviq® in 2012 they required the manufacturer conduct a 5 year clinical trial to evaluate the risk of cardiovascular problems. The trial found that more patients taking the drug had a higher risk of developing the below types of cancer when compared to those taking a placebo.
On February 13, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asked for Belviq®, Belviq® XR (lorcaserin) to be voluntarily removed from the US Market.
